What is Transfeminism?

In order to fully understand The Transfeminist Manifesto by Emi Koyama, it is important to understand the meaning of several terms used to describe the range of gender and gender norm violations. The purpose of this paper is to establish definitions of specific words used in the Transfeminism movement. 

• Gay refers to a homosexual person
• Heterosexual is a romantic attraction or behavior between persons of the opposite sex
• Homophobia is a range of negative attitudes and feelings toward homosexuality
• Homosexuality is a sexual attraction or behavior between members of the same sex or gender
• Intersex people are individuals whose gender identity does not match their assigned sex.
• Lesbian is a female who has a romantic attraction or behavior with other females
• LGBT refer to the global community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals.
• Manifesto is a published verbal declaration of intentions, motives, or views of the issuer
• Misogynist is a person who hates or doesn’t trust women
• NWSA is the National Women’s Studies Assocation
• Queer is a universal term for sexual and gender minorities
• Trans inclusive term including a wide range of gender norm violations that involve some discontinuity betweens one’s sex assigned at birth to her/his gender identity and/or expression
• Transfeminism is the movement by and for trans women who view their liberation to be intrinsically linked to the liberation of all women and beyond
• Transgender applies to someone who doesn’t fit within society’s standards of how a woman or man is supposed to look or act.
• Trans men refer to those who identify, present or live as men despite the fact that they were perceived otherwise at birth
• Transphobia negative attitudes or feelings toward transsexuality and transgender people
• Trans women refers to individuals who identify, present, or live more or less as women despite their birth sex assignment to the contrary
• Transsexual is a person whose mind is trapped in the body of the opposite sex. The initials LGBT refer to the global community of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals.
