One of the Few Great Women Leaders Today

Hillary Rodham Clinton-Second Wave Feminist

Hillary Clinton is one of the most influential women today and an excellent example of the accomplishments women can achieve.  Clinton has been actively involved in politics for over 20 years. Her positions included being a U.S. Senator and the former First Lady. However, her most impressive accomplishment is as the U.S. Secretary of State. Her duties in this role included advising the President on foreign policy, negotiate international treaties, as well as being responsible for supervising all the departmental activities of the United State overseas.

In a speech that Clinton gave at the Women of the World Summit, she stated her mission was “fighting to give women and girls a fighting chance.” John Avlon, the editor for The Daily Beast and a CNN political analyst, said “she is an embodiment of baby-boom second-wave feminists.” Valenti stated that the second wave feminism was known for “women working outside the home, the wage gap, sex discrimination, women’s representation in the government, and fighting traditional notions of motherhood and marriage” (Valenti p170). Clinton is a great example of a successful feminist stating, “I have been working hard to integrate women’s rights as a cornerstone of our foreign policy.”  Her work includes creating programs to promote gender equality, promoting women’s right to education, and creating a special representative to work on fighting the problems of sexual violence in foreign countries such as Saudi Arabia.  Crenshaw stated that, “battering and rape, once seen as private (family matters) and aberrational (errant sexual aggression), are now largely recognized as part of a broad-scale system of domination that affects women as a class” (Crenshaw).  Women like Clinton are helping to make the world aware of these problems and take action to help women around the world.
