Women Changing the World Today

Who are some of the most important women today that open our eyes to acceptance of people for who they are not what they are?

Lady Gaga is an activist delivering messages of acceptance and equality.

Lady Gaga, born March 28, 1986, is a recording artist, record producer, and businesswoman.  As of 2013, she sold approximately 24 million albums and 125 million singles around the world. She freely admits to being bisexual and has written several songs supporting accepting people for exactly who they are. ‘Poker Face’ was a song written about her bisexuality and below are the words to one of her most famous songs, ‘Born this Way.’ This song is about the freedom to be who you are and acceptance of being the way you are, the way you were born.  The “100 Women of the Century” included Amelia Earhart, the first woman to fly the Atlantic, and Lucille Ball who starred in a success TV series. They made important advancements for women in the past 100 years. Lady Gaga is a famous woman of today who stand up for her beliefs.  I believe Lady Gaga is one of the most influential artists today.

The Transfeminist Manifesto by Emi Koyama states first and foremost that the principles of transfeminism are very simple. It is their belief, “that each individual has the right to define her or his own identities and to expect society to respect them.”   Lady Gaga’s song Born this Way encourages this exact same principle. The song indicates that you should love yourself for who you are. In the first line she refers to him with a capital Him which would mean God. This signifies that God made each person to be the way they are, black, white, male, female, straight, gay, or lesbian. That people should be accepting of who they are and the way other people are. This song supports the transfeminism beliefs that every person should live their life following what feels genuine and comfortable to them and that “gender identity is in congruence with their birth sex, as well as for trans people” (Koyama).

Born this Way  By Singer-songwriter, Lady Gaga
It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M
Just put your paws up 'cause you were born this way, baby

My mama told me when I was young
We are all born superstars

She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on
In the glass of her boudoir

"There's nothing wrong with loving who you are"
She said, "'Cause he made you perfect, babe"
"So hold your head up girl and you'll go far,
Listen to me when I say"

I'm beautiful in my way
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way (Born this way)

Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way
Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Right track baby I was born this way

Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Don't be don't be don't be

Give yourself prudence
And love your friends
So we can rejoice your truth

In the religion of the insecure
I must be myself, respect my youth

A different lover is not a sin
Believe capital H-I-M (hey hey hey)
I love my life I love this record and
Mi amore vole fe, yah

I'm beautiful in my way
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way

Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way
Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Right track, baby I was born this way

Don't be a drag, just be a queen
Whether you're broke or evergreen
You're black, white, beige, chola descent
You're Lebanese, you're Orient
Whether life's disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied, or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
'Cause baby you were born this way

No matter gay, straight, or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I'm on the right track baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or orient made
I'm on the right track baby
I was born to be brave

I'm beautiful in my way
'Cause God makes no mistakes
I'm on the right track, baby I was born this way

Don't hide yourself in regret
Just love yourself and you're set
I'm on the right track, baby
I was born this way yeah

Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Baby I was born this way (Born this way)
Oh there ain't no other way
Baby I was born this way
Right track, baby I was born this way
