What is Patriarchy?

What exactly is patriarchy and how does it incite gender discrimination?

Today, the term 'patriarchy' is used frequently to describe one of the main causes of gender discrimination in the world today. However, many people are still unsure of exactly what is patriarchy. Here are explanations and examples of patriarchy.

 Google definition:                                  pa·tri·arch·y

  1. a system of society or government in which the father or eldest male is head of the family and descent is traced through the male line.
    • a system of society or government in which men hold the power and women are largely excluded from it.
    • a society or community organized on patriarchal lines.

Patriarchy is a system or organization where males maintain control and leadership in all areas including social, legal, political, and economic. In a family, this figure of authority is the father. In the government and workforce, patriarchy is the existence of male dominated control. Patriarchy gives men privileges to dominate and rule over the weaker sex which is considered by this system as females.

According to Carol Christ, "Patriarchy is a system of male dominance, rooted in the ethos of war which legitimates violence, sanctified by religious symbols, in which men dominate women through the control of female sexuality, with the intent of passing property to male heirs, and in which men who are heroes of war are told to kill men, and are permitted to rape women, to seize land and treasures, to exploit resources, and to own or otherwise dominate conquered people."

Men may use this dominance of power to discriminate against women in order to retain control. Crude forms of dominance including violence and mild forms include laws limited the rights of women. Gloria Steinem has asserted that "The patriarchy requires violence or the subliminal threat of violence in order to maintain itself..."
